Aurora Shatters World Head Banging Record With 'Totally Excellent' Turnout

AURORA — If any town deserves the title of "Headbanging Capital of the World," it's Aurora, where the idea for Wayne's World first began as a sketch on public access television. On Independence Day, Aurora cemented its place in American —and world— history by smashing the current record for Most People Head Banging Simultaneously and earning a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Mayor Richard Irvin and more than 1,000 Aurora residents rocked out at RiverEdge Park July 4 to break the record previously held by 320 people in Australia. The Facebook event page said the gathering to achieve this radical, awesome goal, was in honor of the 25th anniversary of the release of Wayne's World in theaters. Participants were urged to don flannel shirts and bandanas to invoke the spirit of the 1990s.

The wicked tunes were cranked out by The Fox Valley Orchestra, who started with a rousing rendition of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven before segueing into the 1812 Overture. The excitement and decibels increased as the orchestra began Bohemian Rhapsody, the most iconic song from Wayne's World. As the song reached its apex, more than 1,000 people flung their heads back and forth, their hair flinging wildly, their hands in the air proudly making the rock and roll symbol. Fittingly, the event closed out with a victorious display of fireworks.

Several monitors were in attendance per Guinness Book of World Record rules to verify the record-breaking rock out. The Guinness Book of World Records has yet to certify that the head banging record was broken, but challenges are already coming in from other locales. It's safe to say they've got their work cut out for them.

No word yet on how many residents had a headache the next day.
