Travel Tuesday

Happy Travel Tuesday

What a week for Illinois tourism. This week's Travel Tuesday comes to you all the way from Phoenix, Arizona, where I'm attending the U.S. Travel Association's 2018 ESTO educational forum. ESTO is always such a valuable time for the Illinois Office of Tourism, and these last several days have been an amazing opportunity for our team to network and gain valuable industry knowledge from like-minded professionals.

And that's not the only thing we've been up to this last week. On Thursday, I paid a visit to Fox 32 Chicago to talk about some of the amazing low-cost last-minute travel opportunities we have in Illinois, like spending a night in a treehouse at Timber Ridge Outpost and Cabins near the famous Garden of the Gods; taking a trip to Matthiessen State Park, located just outside Chicago in Lasalle County; and Urban Kayaking on the Chicago River.

Amazing for All art piece

Then it was off to Chicago's Northalsted Market Days to unveil our new art installation by Chicago artist Matthew Hoffman as part of the Illinois Office of Tourism's Amazing For All campaign. And our team partnered with Visit Oak Park & Choose Chicago for a global LGBT FAM tour of Oak Park's Frank Lloyd Wright sites and much more.

As we get set for the fall travel season, August 17 will see the Office of Tourism team in Ottawa for the launch of our all-new Fall/Winter Travel Illinois magazine. This year's launch party will take place at Illinois Made maker Tangled Roots Brewing Company, in honor of the brewery's first cover feature!

And let's not forget our Bicentennial program, Doors Open Illinois, that's been showcasing regional Illinois history all throughout the month of August. Already two weeks into the program, Doors Open Illinois has been a huge success, with thousands of Illinois residents and visitors alike touring historic treasures throughout the state.

Keep your eyes open for more ways we're inspiring visitors to travel Illinois this fall!

ILLINOIS BICENTENNIAL

Interior room of the Illinois Governor's Mansion

The Illinois Governor's Mansion

Built in 1855 for $53,000, the Illinois Governor's Mansion was designed by architect John Mills Van Odsel, Chicago’s first professional architect and designer of Chicago’s City Hall, the Chicago mayor’s house, and Cook County Courthouse.

Its design reflected the southern influence of the town’s population, with a modified Georgian style that complemented the Greco-Roman style of other government buildings. While it carried a distinct touch of Europe, one thing made it very Springfield: its exterior of locally-manufactured red pressed brick, said to be of the very highest quality in the Union.

Then-Governor Matteson and family moved in on January 10, 1856. And since that day, every Illinois Governor has stayed in this historic building.

The Mansion is also notable for a variety of other historical figures who passed through its doors, including President Ulysses S. Grant, President Rutherford B. Hayes, General William Sherman, President Lincoln’s son Robert, President William McKinley, President Herbert Hoover, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, then-Senator Barack Obama, "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Annie Oakley, and, of course, Abraham Lincoln—shortly before receiving his presidential nomination in 1860.

While it’s called the Governor’s Mansion, it’s also known as the People’s House. It stands as a symbol of a state of which all Illinoisans can be proud, and a home where all are welcome.
