Happy Travel Tuesday

As we roll into August, the Illinois Office of Tourism continues to spread the word about Illinois' amazing summer activities. At the same time, now is when we also start getting visitors excited about all the potential things to do in the beautiful autumn weather as well. However you swing it, Illinois is an incredible destination, especially this time of year — and we're hard at work conveying that message.

When it comes to summer, Chicago hosted another successful Lollapalooza over the weekend, seeing thousands of visitors come to town for the iconic music festival. But this weekend, Chicago is right back at it to host another fabulous event: Northalsted Market Days, the largest street festival in the Midwest. This year's festival is an exciting moment for IOT, as we'll be launching a new piece of artwork to coincide with our Amazing For All campaign. I can't wait to share it with you after we unveil it to the public on Saturday, August 11.

During media appearances, I'm also encouraging families to get out and enjoy budget-friendly ideas, such as an outdoors trip to Matthiessen State Park or a weekend getaway at Great Wolf Lodge. And let's not forget another budget-friendly way to see Illinois history up close, as there are still three weekends left to take advantage of Doors Open Illinois, a great initiative happening as part of our Illinois Bicentennial celebrations.

As we get ready for fall, our office is letting folks know about all the ways to enjoy autumn in Illinois, especially road trips to see the fall colors in action. Attractions like Shawnee National Forest, Great Rivers Road, Springfield, Starved Rock State Park, and all the scenic routes to make the most of the weekly Fall Color Report.

I'm excited to share more in the coming weeks about the ways we're inspiring visitors to travel throughout our state this fall. But first, let's make the most of another beautiful summer in Illinois.

Illinois Route 66 Centennial Commission

It's never too early to start planning for a birthday. Last week, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed legislation to create the Illinois Route 66 Centennial Commission — a team dedicated to planning the upcoming 100th anniversary of Route 66 in 2026. In 1989, Illinois was one of the first states to create a Route 66 Association to preserve the iconic Mother Road. This new Commission will include 20 members who reflect the interests, history and significance of the communities along Illinois' historic stretch of Route 66.

Wine bottles lined up at Sleepy Creek Winery.

Sleepy Creek Vineyards in Galena

In the town of Fairmount, in 2006, Joe and Dawn Taylor had just spent the last four years building and cultivating their dream winery when they learned some surprising news: they were technically considered bootleggers. As it turned out, when Prohibition was originally repealed in 1933, the township narrowly voted to keep it dry. Not something you want to find out as you’re about to harvest your first crop of grapes.

Yet, always believing "the wine glass is half full," Joe and Dawn did what any dedicated winemakers would do: they launched their own campaign to end Prohibition in the township. With the support of local residents, Sleepy Creek Vineyards was finally free to uncork their first bottle of wine on May 18, 2007, nearly 75 years after the 21st Amendment was ratified.

A decade later, Sleepy Creek Vineyards is thriving, producing some of the region’s tastiest wines and Joe and Dawn are doing what they love. The vineyard spans more than 10 acres, producing more than 35,000 bottles of wine a year. Every Sleepy Creek Wine is made with homegrown grapes and fruit from local growers.

Some people once believed it was impossible to start a winery, let alone an entire vineyard in East Central Illinois. But Joe and Dawn are proof that anything is possible, especially if you have perseverance, determination and the support of the community. Mighty good wine helps too.
